“The 1619 Project”, which debuted in 2019, won its creator Nikole Hannah-Jones a Pulitzer Prize and initiated years of controversy with its exploration of how the enslavement of Africans in Virginia shaped North America. Afterwards marked by debates on critical race theory, Hannah-Jones rejected a tenured position at the University of North Carolina and moved to Howard University. She also partnered with Lionsgate to develop her project into a documentary series, aimed for a wider audience. Despite the controversy, she sees her work as a step towards redress for slavery’s legacy.
