Perry as Goodnight

INTERVIEW

LUKE PERRY

What makes it easy for you to step into a role like this?

LP: I believe in justice. I think for me, it’s important to define what justice is, for me, the simpler you keep it, the easier it is. Even back then, lawyers would try to get in there and obfuscate things. The judges were empowered a great deal more than they are today to just cut through all that stuff, and say `nope, he’s guilty, she’s guilty and that’s how it’s going to be.’ That really appealed to me and at the same time I found that a character that had to carry that sort of responsibility – being jury, judge and executioner -that’s a lot to carry around. That was compelling to me too but I do share the viewpoint that justice is very simple. I think a lot of times we all look at something and know it’s wrong.

When you and Jason (Priestley) were doing 902010, did you envision taking direction from him.

LP: When I first showed up on the set (of 90210), he was already saying, I want to direct, I want to direct. So I kinda knew that one day he’d do it.

You did a western before.

LP: I’ve done a few with these guys (Hallmark).

You like Westerns.

LP: I do. I do! I like to be outside working. I prefer horses over people.

Do you live on a ranch?

LP: Not currently but I have one and I’m going to live on it someday.

What else is going on with you?

LP: I have a 13-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter. They take up a lot of time but I’m going do a couple more of these westerns [with these guys [with Hallmark]. I took some time off but I am going to get back into it now.

You’ve never wanted to re-visit the past by going back to 90210.

LP: Nope

Why?

LP: The idea as an actor is to stretch. If you’re going backwards … it’s like if you pull a rubber band and it comes back. That’s not stretching. This is stretching. I’ve got to keep going from that. I’ve got to keep going. As brilliant and as beautiful and great as that was, it was a singular experience in my life and I can’t do that again. There’s a lot of safety for me there but that’s not acting. Acting isn’t about safety. It’s about taking those risks. So I choose to scare myself.

Have you watched any of the new 90210?

LP: No but I wish them the best. I hope it’s great and I hope they all have a good time.

If you were on a first-class flight with anyone, who would you want it to be?

LP: Marlon Brando

Why?

LP: He’s fabulous. So many things I’d want to ask him.

Good Night For Justice airs Jan. 29 on the Hallmark Channel

Thanks for the update on Luke Perry. Wondered what he was up to since Jeremiah and Oz. Does anyone remember him in a movie with Ashley Judd called NORMAL LOVE where he played a cop turned bank robber? (I think it was based on a true story)
